Skin and allergy Test:

Skin and allergy tests are diagnostic evaluations used to identify specific allergens or skin conditions that may be causing symptoms. These tests help healthcare providers diagnose allergies, eczema, dermatitis, and other skin-related issues. Common skin and allergy tests include:

  1. Skin Prick Test (SPT): A common allergy test where a small amount of allergen extract is pricked into the skin's surface. If you are allergic to the substance, you will develop a raised, red, itchy bump (wheal) at the site.

  2. Patch Test: Used to diagnose contact dermatitis, this test involves applying patches containing common allergens to the skin for 48 hours. If you are allergic to any of the substances, you will develop a reaction at the patch site.

  3. Blood Tests:

    • Specific IgE Blood Test (ImmunoCAP): Measures the level of allergen-specific IgE antibodies in the blood, indicating an allergic response to specific allergens.
    • Total IgE Test: Measures the overall level of IgE antibodies in the blood, which can be elevated in people with allergies.
  4. Intradermal Test: Similar to the skin prick test but involves injecting a small amount of allergen extract under the skin. This test is more sensitive but also carries a higher risk of causing a severe allergic reaction.

  5. Skin Biopsy: Involves removing a small sample of skin for examination under a microscope to diagnose skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or skin cancer.

  6. Percutaneous (Scratch) Test: A type of skin prick test where the allergen is lightly scratched into the skin's surface.

  7. Food Challenge Test: Involves consuming small amounts of suspected food allergens under medical supervision to confirm or rule out food allergies.

  8. Provocation (Challenge) Test: Used to diagnose drug or environmental allergies by exposing the patient to the suspected allergen under controlled conditions to observe any allergic reactions.
