Fever Tests

Fever tests are diagnostic evaluations used to determine the underlying cause of a fever. Fevers can be caused by a variety of conditions, including infections, inflammatory diseases, and other medical conditions. Identifying the cause of a fever helps healthcare providers develop appropriate treatment plans. Common fever tests include:

  1. Complete Blood Count (CBC): Measures the levels of different blood cells, which can help detect infections, inflammation, and other blood-related conditions.

  2. Blood Culture: Detects the presence of bacteria or fungi in the blood, indicating a bloodstream infection (septicemia).

  3. Urinalysis: Examines the content of urine to detect urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney infections, and other conditions affecting the urinary system.

  4. Urine Culture: Identifies specific bacteria or fungi causing a urinary tract infection by growing them in a lab from a urine sample.

  5. Chest X-ray: Creates images of the chest to detect lung infections (pneumonia), tuberculosis, and other respiratory conditions.

  6. Throat Swab and Culture: Involves taking a sample from the throat to identify bacterial or viral infections, such as streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat).

  7. Stool Sample: Analyzes stool for pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, or parasites causing gastrointestinal infections.

  8. Liver Function Tests (LFTs): Measures enzymes and proteins in the blood to assess liver function and detect liver infections (hepatitis) or inflammation.

  9. C-reactive Protein (CRP) Test: Measures the level of CRP, a marker of inflammation that can be elevated in infections and inflammatory conditions.

  10. Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) Test: Measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a tube of blood, which can be elevated in infections, inflammation, and other conditions.

  11. Viral Panel: Detects specific viral infections such as influenza, dengue, COVID-19, and others through blood or swab tests.

  12. Malaria Test: Detects the presence of malaria parasites in the blood, which can cause fever.

  13. Typhoid Test: Identifies the presence of Salmonella typhi bacteria, which cause typhoid fever.

  14. Tuberculosis (TB) Test: Includes the Mantoux tuberculin skin test (TST) or interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) to detect TB infection.

  15. Rheumatic Fever Tests: Include antistreptolysin O (ASO) titer and other tests to detect an immune response to streptococcal infection, which can cause rheumatic fever.

  16. Autoimmune Disease Tests: Detect autoimmune conditions that may cause fever, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
